IFFCO has always focused on high standards of quality and health. We are at the forefront of technology, development, and implementation. With the increasing consumer demand for healthier products, oil processing is also given high value. Processing contaminants like 3-MCPDE and GE have gained attention and have become a trending issue in the food industry in recent years. 3-MCPDE (3-Monochloropropane-1,2-diol esters) and GE (Glycidyl esters) are compounds that are formed during the refining of oils and fats as a result of thermal stress. These compounds may have adverse health effects.
EU and EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has set guidelines limiting the levels of 3-MCPDE and GE in food. Maximum GE allowed in vegetable oils & fats is 1 ppm. For 3-MCPDE, the maximum allowed limit is said to be less than 2.5 ppm. Infant Formula producers ensure even lower levels of 3-MCPDE and GE in their products and have been applying strict specifications to their suppliers.
“At IFFCO, we have techniques to mitigate these components based on customer requirements. Our Plants in Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Egypt, GCC, and Pakistan can supply oils and fats in compliance with the European standards on 3-MCPDE and GE”.
“The IFFCO Research & Development Centre is equipped with the instruments and technical capability for the determination of these contaminants, and we are proud to say that we are the first laboratory in the region to implement this. Our lab is ISO 17025 accredited with a dedicated R & D team to support the analysis of these compounds in vegetable oils & fats.”
